A School Leader Implementation Lab

Learning Walks
by Design

From classroom observation to organizational learning.

Build a learning-walk practice your faculty trusts, your leaders can sustain, and your school can actually learn from.

Finding clarity in what you notice.
The Challenge

Learning walks are easy to start.
They’re harder to make meaningful.

The real work isn’t getting leaders into classrooms. It’s creating the purpose, trust, habits, and follow-through that turn observation into collective learning.

01

Purpose gets fuzzy.

Walks happen, but leaders aren’t sure what they’re actually trying to learn.

02

Trust erodes.

Faculty experience the practice as evaluation rather than shared inquiry.

03

Observers see differently.

Evidence, interpretation, and personal preference blur together.

04

Nothing happens next.

Observations are collected without a clear way to make sense of or act on them.

The Model

Build the system. Pilot the practice. Learn from what you see.

This isn’t a workshop about how to visit classrooms. It’s a guided implementation experience that helps your leadership team build and launch a learning-walk system that fits your school.

01

Purpose

Clarify the why, focus, and faculty-facing language.

02

Design

Create protocols, roles, cadence, and evidence practices.

03

Walk

Pilot the system in your own school with real classrooms.

04

Make Sense

Identify patterns, bright spots, questions, and conditions.

05

Act

Choose a response, test it, and build the next cycle.

NOTICE → MAKE SENSE → IDENTIFY CONDITIONS → CHOOSE A RESPONSE → TEST → WALK AGAIN
The Experience

A 10–12 week implementation lab for school leadership teams.

Designed for teams of 2–4 leaders who want to move beyond informal walkthroughs and create a purposeful, trusted, sustainable practice.

Week 1

Design the Why

Define purpose, focus, problem of practice, and faculty-facing language.

Week 3

Build the System

Set cadence, roles, observation protocols, and evidence norms.

Week 5

Calibrate

Practice evidence vs. interpretation and build observer consistency.

Weeks 6–8

Pilot the Walks

Run a small cycle in your school and bring the real experience back.

Week 9

Make Sense

Find patterns, conditions, bright spots, and meaningful next questions.

Week 11

Build the Next Cycle

Leave with a concrete 90-day implementation plan.

Included
  • 5 live cohort design labs
  • 1 private school consultation
  • 2 optional drop-in office hours
  • Learning Walks by Design Toolkit
  • Faculty communication templates
  • Calibration + evidence tools
  • Debrief + sensemaking protocols
  • 90-day implementation planner

The goal: not simply to learn about learning walks, but to launch your first cycle successfully.

What You Leave With

Your school’s learning-walk system—not a stack of workshop notes.

The system

By the end of the lab, your team has the structures needed to keep the work going.

The Walk-to-Action Map

A repeatable process for moving from what leaders notice to what the organization learns—and what the school does next.

Notice→Make Sense→Identify Conditions→Choose a Response→Test→Walk Again
Who It’s For

For leaders ready to make classroom observation part of how the school learns.

Best for a small team that can build the practice together and carry it back into the daily life of the school.

Why Meghan

Meghan Cureton has spent more than two decades designing learning cultures and helping schools translate ambitious ideas into everyday practice. Her experience launching and supporting learning walks and instructional rounds is grounded in the often-overlooked work around them: trust, culture, implementation, sensemaking, and what happens after the walk.

Founding Cohort

Build a learning-walk practice with intention.

The first Learning Walks by Design cohort will be intentionally small so participating schools receive meaningful feedback while building alongside other independent-school leaders.
